These movies were made with a Hamamatsu C2400 video camera, which provides superb control of gain, offset, and shading, a Sony NTSC-to-FireWire bridge, and an Apple iMac G3 running the excellent shareware programs BTV Pro (for time-lapse frame capture) and GraphicConverter (for encoding frames into movies). Embryos were mounted in chambers consisting of a clean glass slide, a #0 glass coverslip supported by glass chips, and sealed with vacuum grease. Marine invertebrate embryos were mounted in filtered seawater, whereas Nasonia embryos were mounted in Voltalef 3S oil. Marine embryos were filmed on a Zeiss WL Standard microscope chilled to seawater temperature.
