Please note: images on this page belong to Paulette Brunner. Please do not use them without consulting her. They were taken many years ago using Rheinberg illumination (in most cases) and a flash photomicroscope. The flash allowed her to freeze motion in ciliated or muscular larvae. In Rheinberg illumination, a colored stop (in this case blue) is placed near the condenser aperture with a diameter such that all the light passing directly from condenser to objective is one color; light from the periphery of the condenser, which would miss the objective in the absence of a specimen, is another color (in this case white) and changes its path due to the refractive, reflective, or light-scattering properties of the specimen such that it enters the objective. Most of these are marine plankton, and some are freshwater.
